Sony buys videogame-remake studio Bluepoint to create original games

Sony Group Corp. announced Thursday it is acquiring Bluepoint Games, a studio best known for remaking classic PlayStation videogames.

In recent years, Bluepoint won acclaim for its “Demon’s Souls” remake for the PS5, which has sold about 1.4 million copies since its release last November, along with its remake of “Shadow of the Colossus” for the PS4, and remasters of fan favorites like “Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection,”  “Metal Gear Solid HD Collection” and “God of War Collection.”

Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

The deal will allow Austin, Texas,-based Bluepoint to expand its scope and develop original games.

“With each of its projects, Bluepoint has raised the bar on console-defining visuals and gameplay, and the studio’s vast expertise in world building and character creation will be a huge plus for future PlayStation Studios properties,” Herman Hulst, Sony’s head of PlayStation Studios, said in a statement.

In the same news release, Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint Games, said: “We’re thrilled to have officially joined PlayStation Studios!”

“PlayStation has such an iconic gaming catalog and for us there’s been nothing better than to bring some of gaming’s masterpieces to new players,” Thrush said.
